Ruud van Nistelrooy addresses Jannik Vestergaard omission as two covering players named
Ruud van Nistelrooy maintains that Jannik Vestergaard’s continued absence from Leicester City is solely a “technical and tactical decision,” with other players capable of filling in where the center-back may be needed.
Vestergaard has missed the last five games for City in their matchday squad, with his most recent appearance coming as a starter in the team’s 2-0 loss to West Ham at the end of February.
The Dane’s absence was most noticeable last weekend against Brighton, when Wout Faes’ injury created a spot for a center-back.
Caleb Okoli was called up from the bench to the eleven, but Vestergaard was still left out of the squad. Van Nistelrooy decided not to use a center-back deputy and instead used teenagers Jake Evans and Bade Aluko as substitutes.
When asked if Vestergaard’s absence had a reason, van Nistelrooy responded, “It’s a technical and tactical decision, one that you have to make.”
“Luke Thomas and James Justin can play center-back, so there are other possibilities. They can also play full-back and wing-back. So I have had enough options on the bench in the past games so that’s why that decision was made.
” Van Nistelrooy admitted to using two center-back substitutes for the majority of his first few months in charge of City.
Vestergaard has kept up his training with City, but he isn’t expected to be called up for Sunday’s match against Liverpool either, especially since van Nistelrooy wants to bring in more young players as he gets ready for the future.
“I’m really focused on managing the team and getting the best out of them,” van Nistelrooy said. “I spoke recently about fighting until the end but also shaping the future, bringing in lots of academy players to work with us.
” Two of them, Jeremy Monga and Jake Evans, have made their debuts.
“We’re reshaping the future by bringing back players like Stephy Mavididi, Kasey McAteer, and Luke Thomas, players that are part of the future of this club.” “That’s important. That’s what I’m working on.”
“Those four or five weeks and six games, for us, are huge. They are huge for every individual and for the future of this club.” Even though he isn’t playing right now, Vestergaard might be a part of the future at City as well.
The 32-year-old signed a three-year contract last summer, tying himself to the team until 2027.”
