Despite being relegated to Ligue 2, AS Saint-Étienne has attempted to seal the permanent signing of Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah (23) – but the Frenchman may not stay long.
Ekwah, who joined on loan from the Championship last summer, was one of Les Verts’ most consistent performances during a challenging season, appearing in 30 games across all competitions. His performances encouraged the club to exercise the €6 million purchase option included in his loan agreement. The former West Ham academy product has a contract in England until 2027.
However, Ekwah’s future at the Geoffroy-Guichard is far from certain. According to L’Équipe, several top-flight clubs in Europe have already expressed interest in the defensive midfielder. Given Saint-Étienne’s relegation and financial situation, the club may be willing to sell their new signing to raise finances.
