Saints’ Joy Short-Lived as Board Dismisses Ajax Icon’s Return
Former Southampton winger Dušan Tadić has entered the free agent market, but any hope of a fairytale return has been swiftly dismissed by the Saints’ board.
Earlier today, news of Fraser Forster’s departure from Tottenham sparked excitement among Saints fans, fueling dreams of a potential return to St. Mary’s. While it’s far too early to assume such a move will happen, there’s nothing wrong with hoping for familiar faces to return—much like Adam Lallana did last year.
That said, any such deals would need to be free transfers. Paying fees for aging players can be risky, both financially and in terms of fitness—an area where Southampton have already learned some tough lessons.
With that in mind, the club remains focused on signing in-form players with reliable injury records—an approach that aligns well with their goal of upgrading the squad.
Tadić Doesn’t Fit Southampton’s Youth-Focused Vision
So, what about a nostalgia-fueled move for club hero and former Ajax star Dušan Tadić? The Serbian playmaker is currently without a club, which naturally sparks speculation about possible returns to his former teams.
Picture him on the left wing, with his biggest admirer Tyler Dibling on the right—an exciting creative boost for the front line.
Unfortunately, Southampton have little interest in making that vision a reality. As reported by *Daily Echo*’s George Rees-Julian:
“At 36, he doesn’t fit the development-focused recruitment model set out by Johannes Spors. He would be a welcome addition, though, IMO.”
In short, a Tadić return remains highly unlikely. Still, regardless of how Southampton plan to reinforce their front three, it might be wise to take a page from club legend Francis Benali’s book before making any decisions.
At the end of the day, the mission remains the same: strengthen Southampton’s squad—whether through emerging talents or experienced veterans.
