Saturday interview: Barnsley FC signing David McGoldrick on ageing like a fine wine, defiance and Mick McCarthy.

DAVID McGOLDRICK already has a lot to be thankful to Barnsley for. In essence, it has nothing to do with the Oakwell Club.
But it all has to do with one of the town’s most well-known sports figures, who represented his hometown team with distinction on the pitch and went on to become a highly respected manager off it.
Mick McCarthy once stated, in his own unique way, that the initials ‘MM’ on his training kit did not stand for ‘Merlin the Magician.’ McCarthy, a genuine, down-to-earth Yorkshireman with a gift for language, swiftly realised that magic wands had no place in football. Fundamental decency exists.
McCarthy not only put McGoldrick up for a fantastic second half of his career during their time together at Ipswich, but he also helped to shape him into a better person and professional in his role as an unofficial mentor.
