Senior journalist defends ‘controversial’ Danny Rohl comments that left Sheffield Wednesday fans unhappy.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has been defended after his recent comments about his squad.
Sheffield Wednesday fell to defeat against Stoke City this season, with a 2-0 defeat adding to the Owls’ current slump that has mainly come from issues off the pitch.
Dejphon Chansiri penned a message to Sheffield Wednesday fans recently, in which he confirmed his unwaivering support to the club, despite recent issues that saw players and a handful of backroom staff having to wait for their payment in March.
Such issues with players not being paid has taken away focus from Sheffield Wednesday’s current form, which sees them handed four defeats and two draws in their previous six, a run that German boss Danny Rohl is clearly far from happy with.
Following the defeat to Stoke City, Rohl said: “Some players showed today that they’re not able to play at my level. Maybe it’s an (eye) opener for the new season.”
Such a verdict is incredibly damning of his side, with many fans believing such a comment is unjustified, but he has been defended by one journalist.

BBC journalist Rob Staton defends Danny Rohl over recent Sheffield Wednesday squad verdict
Sheffield Wednesday fans, it’s safe to say, were far from happy with Rohl’s post-match comments he delivered, many of which suggested he was within the realms of throwing them under the bus.
This comes after the Owls were unable to finish their season on a high, having been in a position to be an outsider to snatch a play-off place, up until their recent run.
The Owls manager, however, has been defended by BBC journalist Rob Staton, who took to X and said: “A thought on the post-match comments from Danny Röhl. It’s possible for a manager to appreciate his players (“I will never forget this group”) and also be honest about what is required to be in a promotion race. It is not as controversial as some are making out that to compete for promotion, Sheffield Wednesday need more quality.”
Staton focuses on the Sheffield Wednesday fans’ desire for realism, something that Rohl certainly has delivered, but many believed that it was the wrong time to add further fuel to the fire of the club’s current situation.
Danny Rohl verdict is the kick that Owls fans need, and anger must be directed elsewhere
In recent years, Sheffield Wednesday have suffered with mediocrity, and that has seen them prolong their time away from the Premier League.
Ultimately, not many sides, the size of Sheffield Wednesday, would be quite as content with staying in the Championship, and whilst it is a difficult truth for Rohl to utter, the German has got it spot on.
Rohl’s frustration ultimately stems from one direction, and that is Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has arguably, despite admittedly pumping money into the club, held the club back from reaching its full potential.
The reality is that a significant financial investment will be needed for Sheffield Wednesday to reach that next stage, and the likelihood of that happemoing under Chansiri is minimal.
