Sheffield United and Birmingham City given boost in forward hunt as Hull City update emerges.
Sheffield United and Birmingham City appear to have a significant lead over Hull City in the race to recruit Oli McBurnie.
The 29-year-old is technically a free agent after his contract with Las Palmas expired, and he has been linked with a number of clubs. Sheffield United, whom he left last year for pastures new in Spain, have expressed interest in a reunion.
Hull has also been connected, as have Championship newcomers Birmingham and another of his former employers, Swansea City. According to reports, Hull were hoping to get the Scotland-capped frontman on a free transfer, but their chances appear to have been dashed.
Hull City dealt blow
The Tigers were recently placed under a transfer embargo, and according to Hull Live, conversations with possible new recruits are on hold pending the outcome of their appeal.
It has been suggested that two transfer wishlists were created, one for the successful appeal and one for the unsuccessful appeal. With the club’s transfer operations halted, Hull fear losing out on targets to rivals in a fast-paced and ever-changing window scene.
If Sheffield United, Birmingham, and Swansea are interested in McBurnie, this may be the opportunity to strike and achieve an agreement.
Oliver McBurnie’s future McBurnie who has previously played for Bradford City and Barnsley, might be valuable to a number of Championship clubs. He has a strong background and has consistently scored goals at the second-tier level throughout his career.
A promotion push could be appealing to the attacker, especially after his relegation from La Liga with Las Palmas last season.
McBurnie was relegated for the second time in a straight, after leaving the Premier League with Sheffield United in 2024. Regarding his decision to leave Bramall Lane for Spain, he stated:
“I’d been there five years, and I loved everything about it, but I was looking for a new challenge.” There was always a part of me that wanted to leave, yet I felt safer there.”
