Sheffield United could break Coventry City hearts for third year with transfer move for their best player

Sheffield United linked with a transfer bid for a “top-flight player in the making” who would crush Coventry City hearts once more.

Sheffield United have already broken Coventry City’s hearts with transfer raids for their best players in the last two summer windows, and they may look to repeat the trick this time around, according to new reports. The Blades had significant success when they signed Gus Hamer as Sander Berge’s replacement in 2023.

Hamer then helped persuade Callum O’Hare to join him at Bramall Lane last summer, and the pair continued their successful relationship from the CBS Arena as United just missed out on promotion via the play-offs.

The Blades may need to rebuild this summer, as Hamer and Vini Souza’s futures are uncertain. Signing players with EFL experience will be crucial, as they did with Michael Cooper and Harrison Burrows last summer. According to reports, United have added Sky Blues’ Jack Rudoni to their list.

Newcastle United have already been connected with a move for the 23-year-old, whose talent for scoring from late runs in the box has earned him comparisons to his manager Frank Lampard, and there is speculation in the Midlands that if Lampard departs this summer, the midfielder may follow.

Southampton and Leicester City have also been linked with Rudoni, who had nine goals and 12 assists in 43 regular season matches, matching Hamer’s output.

Sunderland defeated Coventry in the play-off semi-finals before putting on another late display against the Blades at Wembley Stadium to secure their spot in the Premier League the following season. Speaking about his main player, former England international Lampard said: “I work with him a lot because he’s easy to deal with.

“He engages and wants to improve. He has excellent talent and energy. We are working on finishing. As a young man, he is quite contagious. It’s also a wonderful pleasure to work with a player and watch him grow and improve on his own.

Sheffield United are apparently interested in Coventry City’s Jack Rudoni, who is described as “a Premier League player in the making”. According to Adam Cottier, a BBC Radio 5 live correspondent, Rudoni is a top-tier player in all but name. “His ability to maintain possession of the ball in tight areas is superb,” he told me.

“Rudoni, like Frank Lampard in his prime, has natural abilities that lead him into situations where he is a top goal threat. “Released by Crystal Palace as a youngster, he looks to be a top-flight player in the making – as astute a signing as any Championship side made last summer.”
