Sheffield United ‘expected’ to revisit interest in QPR stalwart with post-Wembley exits on the cards.
Sheffield United’s interest in Jimmy Dunne
Chris Wilder, the Blades manager, wanted to improve his backline during the winter transfer window. Dunne was on the club’s radar, but an agreement with QPR could not be reached. Instead, Sheffield United signed experienced Rob Holding on loan from Crystal Palace. Wilder stated, “We made a bid for Jimmy, but it was knocked down. He was not our player, and QPR had every right to do what they needed to do at the time. “We made a reasonable proposal for a guy who was out of contract this summer. We obviously like the player; else, we would not have placed a bid.
“But QPR had every right to turn it down, and they did. And we went on, and I’m glad we got Rob in. He’s been excellent, he’s had a lot of experience, it’s been great for me and the coaches to have him around, and he’s fit in nicely. He’s a popular member of the group and an excellent player.” Post-Wembley reconstruction at Bramall Lane Sheffield United will play in the Championship again after a painful play-off final defeat to Sunderland. When clubs fail to avoid relegation, they often turn to the sharks for some of their most valuable assets.
Leeds United found themselves in this position last year, losing Archie Grey, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter to Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively. Sheffield United may be interested in defender Anel Ahmedhodzic, who has previously attracted admiring glances in the Premier League. He has just one year left on his contract, so a bid may be difficult for the Blades to turn down. Holding, meantime, is set to return to his parent club following the end of his loan stay, and it is unclear whether another deal would be sought.
There could be exits further up the pitch at Bramall Lane, with the departure of important midfielder Gustavo Hamer not seeming unlikely in the shadow of Wembley sorrow.
