Sheffield United ‘interested’ in shock move for ex-Barnsley FC marksman also eyed by Hull City

Sheffield United are reportedly eyeing a shock move to take Oli McBurnie back to Bramall Lane.

The 28-year-old left the Blades last year, declining a new contract to pursue other opportunities after five years with the club.

He joined Las Palmas in Spain, leaving England for the first time in his professional career.

However, his debut season in La Liga resulted in relegation to the second tier.

Clubs target Oli McBurnie

According to reporter Alan Nixon via his Patreon page, Sheffield United are interested in the Scotland-capped frontman.
The club were previously connected with a transfer for McBurnie in January, but a move return to South Yorkshire failed to materialise.

Hull, who have previously been connected with a swoop, have also mentioned as an interested party. Swansea City have also been placed in the mix and previously employed McBurnie between 2015 and 2019.

However, it appears like Celta Vigo may offer him the option to stay in Spain and compete in La Liga again.

From Bradford City to La Liga

After being released by Leeds United as a youth, McBurnie finished his professional career at Bradford City.

He quickly rose through the ranks of the first squad before being signed by Swansea.

While he later became a significant character for the Welsh club, he first had to go on loan to Newport County, Bristol Rovers, and Barnsley.

Sheffield United spent a record £17.5 million for his services in 2019, and he scored 29 goals in 159 games for the Blades.

Oli McBurnie’s Sheffield United exit

In September, McBurnie remarked of his exit from Bramall Lane: “Obviously, I had a free contract in the summer. It’s one of them; I was constantly in communication with Sheffield United.

“I’d been there for five years, and while I loved everything about it, I was looking for a new challenge. There was always a part of me that wanted to resign there, but I felt it was safer.”
