Sheffield United must sign 60-goal free agent to solve glaring issue for Ruben Selles’ side

Sheffield United have been in surprisingly poor form since the start of the Championship season, and one signing could help turn that around.

Sheffield United have lost their opening four games of the 2025/26 Championship campaign under Ruben Selles to leave the Blades rock-bottom of the table.

Defeats to Bristol City, Swansea City, Millwall and most recently at Middlesbrough have seen the Spaniard endure a nightmare start at Bramall Lane.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed recently that Sheffield United chiefs will give Selles time to turn his side’s turgid early-season form around.

The Blades have registered only one goal in their first four outings, the lowest return in the division, and the capture of one former Premier League star on a free deal would help mitigate this concern.

Sheffield United should sign free agent Patrick Bamford

Some Sheffield United fans want Selles sacked already, which could come to fruition if he fails to oversee a rapid improvement at Bramall Lane when league action resumes.

Although Selles’ side have struggled in the defensive sense, the signings of Japhet Tanganga, Ben Godfrey and Nils Zatterstrom are poised to bolster the Blades’ backline.

After Kieffer Moore’s move to Wrexham, the glaring area of concern for Sheffield United so far this season has been their toothlessness in the attacking third.

EFL expert Justin Peach, of the Second Tier podcast, believes that Sheffield United’s attacking problems were not addressed in the summer transfer window.

Therefore, the signing of free agent Patrick Bamford after his Leeds United departure could prove to be a shrewd bit of business from the Bramall Lane hierarchy.

Club name Games Goals
MK Dons (loan) 44 21
Derby County (loan) 23 8
Middlesbrough 97 33
Leeds United 207 60

Patrick Bamford’s goalscoring record at four of his previous clubs, data from Fotmob. In his 207-game stint at Elland Road, Bamford notched 60 goals and registered 20 assists to play a pivotal role in Leeds’ resurgence to the Premier League.

Barring last season, Bamford was an effective striker for the Whites, and the number nine could prove a sensible short-term solution for Sheffield United’s goalscoring drop-off.

Patrick Bamford can replace loss of Kieffer Moore after Wrexham move

Although he was not in particularly prolific form, Moore remained a handful for Championship defences to deal with throughout last season.

The Welshman’s departure for Wrexham has left the Blades devoid of a physical presence upfront, with Tyrese Campbell leading the line on his own so far this season.

Despite Sheffield United fans being divided over Rhian Brewster’s departure for Derby County this summer, even his presence would have been a potential antidote to the Blades’ lack of potency in the final third.

Middlesbrough had no interest in re-signing Bamford this summer, but that does not mean his days as an effective Championship operator are over.

His experience at second tier level, ability to bring teammates into play and eye for goal would aid Sheffield United’s search for goals, if Bamford can rekindle his best goalscoring form.
