Sheffield United Rebuffed £13m Summer Offer from Leeds United for Gustavo Hamer

Gustavo Hamer is expected to depart Sheffield United this summer, with Leeds United among those interested in signing the midfield playmaker.

Everton, the Whites’ Premier League rivals, are also reportedly interested in Hamer, who was named Championship Player of the Season this year. Hamer, a Brazilian-born Dutchman, scored 10 goals and assisted eight times to propel the Blades into automatic promotion contention. Leeds and Burnley finished ahead of Chris Wilder’s side in the top two due to a bad season finale.

Sunderland defeated the South Yorkshire club in a thrilling play-off final, denying them an immediate return to the Premier League. Hamer, who was forced out with a knock in the Wembley showpiece, was plainly upset at the end.

It remains to be seen whether United will renew their interest in Hamer. Last summer, the Bramall Lane administration rejected their proposal of £13 million for the former Coventry City player.

“He [Hamer] is always heavily linked because of what he has done,” ex-Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie told Football League World. “After moving from Coventry to Sheffield United, he got a taste of the Premier League and became one of their main players, earning Championship Player of the Year honours.

“If they could keep him, that would be excellent for the football club, but I believe he will leave in the summer. I believe someone will remove him from Sheffield United. “This is the issue for them.”

They have some good players and have recruited successfully in recent seasons, but if you don’t get promoted, the inevitable comes.

“These players are in the Championship for another season, and when you get linked, which Hamer will do, I believe it will be his last season in a Blades shirt, which is awful because they’re a terrific club and he’s been brilliant for them.
