Sheffield United set to sign ‘outstanding’ defender, he is ‘expected’ to play vs Millwall
The Blades are set to bring in a Premier League-experienced centre-back as Sheffield United’s ‘adapted’ transfer approach works its magic.
Sheffield United face Millwall this weekend as they hope to get their first win of the 2025/26 campaign.
The Blades have suffered three successive defeats in all competitions, and many eyes have turned towards the unsatisfactory recruitment under the stewardship of the new ownership group, COH Sports.
It was clear that the options in defence had been depleted, which led to Ruben Selles hitting out at the club’s recruitment process.
Fortunately, those concerns have been seen to, and it looks as though the Spaniard will get his wish for a top-level defender to add to his ranks.

Ben Godfrey passes medical at Sheffield United ahead of move
It has been revealed, via Pete O’Rourke on X, that Sheffield United are set to sign Ben Godfrey after he passed his medical at Bramall Lane.
Godfrey is expected to be available for selection in Sheffield United’s home clash against Millwall, which will be a major boost to Ruben Selles.
The 27-year-old arrives at Bramall Lane with a wealth of experience in the Premier League and Championship, having notably accumulated 115 appearances of top-flight football. This was predominantly for Everton, where he was referred to as ‘outstanding’ by Sean Dyche, via The Star.
Godfrey found himself out of action for the majority of the 2024/25 season, having struggled to get into the starting 11 on a regular basis at both Atalanta and Ipswich Town.
Sheffield United have successfully ‘adapted’ after Ruben Selles’ transfer demand
It was clear that Sheffield United’s transfer approach this season had been somewhat disconnected, having been unable to bring in a sufficient amount of players ahead of the opening Championship tie against Bristol City.
The area in which the Blades were dangerously low on players was at centre-back, but that has now been fixed by the club with the arrival of Ben Godfrey.
It could be argued that such a deal has only been struck by the pressure that Ruben Selles had put on the board to improve recruitment, having spoken about the ‘adapted’ approach that had been taken since the Spaniard hit out.
Speaking to The Star, Selles said: “I think we’ve got more aligned with the players we want and the different things we need to do to make a deal like the financial things, like the player, like the age. I think those things came together in the last, let’s say, 10 days.”
“I wouldn’t say it changed but it adapted, to be more clear and more direct,” Selles explained. “And that has made us more effective. That was explained or expressed by myself because I’m the one that is always in front of you [in the media] and I think that was needed from inside also. It was all the parts implicated in that and all had something to say.”
