Vinicius Souza, a Sheffield United star, has announced his exit from the Bramall Lane club, expressing his admiration for cross-city rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
The Brazilian midfielder, who is largely likely to join Bundesliga heavyweights Wolfsburg, overcame a rough start in red and white to become a fan favourite after 76 games. On Friday evening, he resorted to social media to announce his impending departure, but he also dropped a bombshell.
A post on Souza’s X account said, “The time has come to say goodbye to this incredible club.” Thank you to all of our players, staff, and fantastic supporters who have always supported us. I’d like to convey my gratitude and promise to always keep you in my heart. Thanks, Blades. I love you, @swfc.’
After receiving a rush of lighthearted responses from both sides of the city, the post was quickly deleted, and the 26-year-old responded with ‘Don’t forget, Sheffield has always been and always will be red.’
Last season, United completed a double over the Owls, meeting for the first time in six years and winning both games by a single goal. Both have had busy summers, with Blades manager Chris Wilder leaving and Owls manager Danny Röhl nearing the end of talks to negotiate his Hillsborough resignation amid the ongoing crisis at S6 Stadium. Following United’s loss in the play-off final in May, the two sides will reprise their rivalry next season.
