There was no shortage of intrigue in the summer transfer market regarding the future of experienced striker Oli McBurnie. The Scotland international, a proven Championship performer, had reached a crossroads in his career after leaving Sheffield United and testing himself abroad for the first time.

 

McBurnie had joined Las Palmas in La Liga following the Blades’ relegation from the Premier League in 2023/24. The move was billed as a fresh challenge, but his stint in Spain proved short-lived. For a Hull side with ambitions of mounting a genuine promotion challenge, McBurnie’s experience and knack for decisive goals in the Championship could prove invaluable.

 

From the outside, Sheffield United’s decision not to re-sign McBurnie may look like a “miss.” His presence could have eased the attacking burden at Bramall Lane during a turbulent start. Instead, the Blades find themselves struggling for consistency in front of goal, and the contrast with McBurnie’s early impact at Hull is stark.

 

That being said, the Blades’ reluctance is understandable. McBurnie’s final months in red and white were underwhelming, and after five years at the club, perhaps both parties needed a clean break.

 

Ultimately, Hull City may have hit the jackpot. McBurnie brings a proven track record and appears revitalised under new management. For Sheffield United, the decision not to go back for their former striker might come under further scrutiny if their attacking woes continue.
