Sheffield United Wanted Sheffield Wednesday Ace Before Chris Wilder Exit, Blackburn Rovers Also Keen
Sheffield United made a surprise move for Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama prior to Chris Wilder’s departure, according to journalist Alan Biggs.
The Blades were reportedly keen on the French-born wide man, who impressed last season for the Owls despite their struggles in the Championship. Gassama, 23, has caught the eye with his electric pace, direct style and ability to break lines from the flanks — attributes that made him a key target for Wilder in what was set to be a major squad rebuild at Bramall Lane.
However, those plans were halted following United’s heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Sunderland at Wembley. The result led to Wilder’s dismissal, ending his second spell at the club. Ruben Selles, who was recently sacked by Hull City, has since been appointed as the new head coach, leaving previous transfer strategies under review.
Gassama joined Wednesday from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 and has developed into one of the club’s most valuable assets. Despite Wednesday narrowly avoiding relegation last term, he stood out with six goals and several assists, often being the creative spark in a struggling side.
Alan Biggs revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that the interest from Sheffield United came before Wilder’s exit and that there’s no confirmation yet on whether new boss Selles will maintain that interest. That uncertainty could open the door for other suitors — with Blackburn Rovers now reportedly stepping up their pursuit of the winger.
Rovers, managed by John Eustace, are looking to strengthen their wide options and see Gassama as a player who fits their profile. The Lancashire club is aiming to bounce back after an inconsistent 2024/25 campaign, and the addition of someone with Gassama’s flair and Championship experience would certainly boost their chances.
Sheffield Wednesday, for their part, are reluctant to part ways with one of their standout players. However, financial realities and the player’s own ambitions could force their hand if a suitable offer is made. Sources close to Hillsborough suggest a fee in the region of £3-5 million might be enough to tempt them to the negotiating table.
Gassama is believed to be open to a move that furthers his development and keeps him in contention for international recognition, having previously represented France at youth level. With both Sheffield United and Blackburn interested, and potentially more clubs circling, the coming weeks could prove decisive.
For now, the ball appears to be in Ruben Selles’ court as he assesses his inherited squad and transfer targets. Whether he reignites United’s interest in Gassama remains to be seen — but the winger’s future is clearly a hot topic as the summer window heats up.
