Sheffield United have had a terrible few days, and following Saturday’s heartbreaking defeat to Sunderland, Chris Wilder must now pick up the pieces ahead of a crucial summer transfer window.
The Blades suffered another defeat in the Championship play-off final, when Tommy Watson secured victory for the Black Cats in the 95th minute at Wembley Stadium.
The South Yorkshire outfit had a forgettable day, and although grabbing the lead in the 25th minute through Tyrese Campbell, they were denied a return to the Premier League after being relegated a year ago.
Now, Wilder must find a way to galvanise Sheffield United for next season, and he has already selected his first target as he seeks promotion in 2025/26.
Sheffield United will move back in for Jimmy Dunne after the January rejection.
Queens Park Rangers are currently embroiled in a managerial issue that fans will be hoping does not derail their summer, but they may be about to lose one of their key players in the coming weeks.
According to Alan Nixon, Sheffield United are resuming their pursuit of Jimmy Dunne in the summer window, with the defender’s contract at Loftus Road expiring at the end of June.
Nixon stated of the probable deal: “Sheffield United will begin their rebuilding project with a move for QPR centre-half Jimmy Dunne. Chris Wilder wanted Dunne in the January transfer window, but they couldn’t agree on a price, so Rangers forced the defender out.

“However, Dunne will be free to join the Blades and provide a senior centre-half for next season. Wilder had to chop and change in that department, and he’ll be relieved to get his new campaign started swiftly.
Chris Wilder understands how crucial it is to get the right defenders in.
Sheffield United have needed that piece of talent next to Anel Ahmedhodzic in the heart of their defence since Harry Souttar’s season-ending injury in January, but Dunne will fill that gap.
At 27, the centre-back, who also has experience at right-back, is entering his prime, and securing a free move would be a tremendous coup for the Blades, especially if some of their key players depart this summer.
Wilder’s goal in 2025/26 will be to avoid the play-offs, with Sheffield United’s poor record in the competition resurfacing over the weekend, but they have the opportunity to be the Championship pacesetters the following season.
Building a good base to work from is crucial, and the Blades’ pursuit of Dunne demonstrates that they are not willing to rest on their laurels following their tragic conclusion to the campaign.
