Sheffield Wednesday charged due to not paying players, as EFL issues a warning

The Championship club faces allegations of having “multiple breaches of EFL regulations.”

The EFL has charged Sheffield Wednesday for “multiple breaches” concerning the club’s payment obligations.

Due to what were referred to as “cashflow” issues, the Championship club was unable to pay the players their salaries on time in March.

Subsequent reports indicate that there were issues with payments for May as well. These payments reportedly included non-playing club staff and other personnel.

The EFL characterized the situation as “clearly concerning”, while the governing body is “considering all the options available”.

On Tuesday, the EFL confirmed that formal action had now been initiated.

According to a statement from the EFL, “Sheffield Wednesday Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations.”

Despite his promise to finance the club’s cash needs, Dejphon Chansiri, who owns Sheffield Wednesday, has been charged with causing the club to violate EFL Regulations.

“The charges pertain to the failure of both the Ultimate Beneficial Owner and the club to fulfill their obligations regarding timely and complete payment of players’ wages in March and May 2025.

Mr Chansiri and the club have a period of 14 days to reply to the charges.

After finishing 12th in the Championship, Wednesday’s manager Danny Rohl has been associated with a potential summer departure.

In a subsequent statement, the club conveyed Chansiri’s offer of “sincere apologies” to all affected and indicated that a resolution was being sought “at the earliest possible opportunity”.

The club is still looking for a resolution concerning outstanding salaries owed for May at the earliest possible opportunity.
