Sheffield Wednesday: Dejphon Chansiri must listen to clear Danny Rohl relegation warning

As the season comes to an end, Sheffield Wednesday’s summer will be unexpected.

After barely avoiding relegation the season before, Wednesday was a surprise play-off contender in the first half of

the season. However, a decline in performance since the beginning of the season has caused Danny Rohl’s squad to

fall out of the top six.

In addition to the poor performance, the Owls have had other off-field issues in recent months, including ongoing

speculation about Rohl’s future and the late player wage payments in March that almost led to the team being

restricted from making transfers for three windows.

They defeated play-off-chasing Middlesbrough 2-1 on Monday, marking a rare moment of optimism for Wednesday.

They are still on track to finish in the top half, which would be a major improvement over last season. It was their

first home win since New Year’s Day.

Championship table (as it stands 23rd April)
Team P GD Pts
9 Blackburn Rovers 44 4 62
10 West Brom 44 8 60
11 Swansea City 44 -4 60
12 Watford 44 -7 56
13 Sheffield Wednesday 44 -9 56
14 Norwich City 44 1 53
15 QPR 44 -6 53
16 Portsmouth 44 -13 52

Ahead of Rohl’s anticipated retirement this summer, many Owls supporters worry that progress may be lost. The

German raised eyebrows over the Easter weekend when he issued a concerning warning to owner Dejphon Chansiri,

who is under pressure.

Wednesday defeated relegation-threatened Stoke City 2-0 at the bet365 Stadium on Good Friday, despite ending the

Easter break with an incredible comeback victory against Middlesbrough on Monday.

A relegation struggle could be imminent next season, Rohl said in a harsh attack on his players after the game, saying

that many of them are incapable of playing his preferred brand of football.

When Rohl told The Star, “It is a big disappointment,”

“How can I describe it? There are two things; at first we have to separate the last four or five results from the other 18

months. I have to admit that we are currently destroying our hard work.

Conversely, during the past several weeks, a few players have demonstrated that they are incapable of playing my

brand of football.

“You talk about quality and decision-making. If you want to improve as a club, you need to do a lot of things right in

the summer. If you don’t, and I’ll tell you this, it will be a huge battle to stay in this league next season because we

have a lot of players who can’t play football at this level.

“I have to be honest. I accept responsibility, give players an opportunity, and have repeatedly defended my players.

However, the outcome falls short of expectations. These are the necessities; I’m not asking for anything

extraordinary.

“As you can see, we may have overperformed over the past 18 months. We competed for a play-off spot until

matchday 40, but perhaps now we can see how we got this group this far. Overall, it will be a challenging summer,

even if I have some amazing players.”
