Sheffield Wednesday Face Fresh Blow as Blackburn Rovers Target Key Winger in Shock Enquiry

According to Alan Nixon, Blackburn Rovers have expressed interest in signing Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama.

Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday are in drastically different places going into the 2025/26 season.

The Owls are in financial difficulty, with players going unpaid and the club facing a three-window registration embargo for a variety of reasons, but Rovers are looking forward to a brighter future under Valerien Ismael.

The Lancashire club is also backing the Frenchman, having already welcomed Dion De Neve and Sidnei Tavares to Ewood Park.

According to reporter Alan Nixon’s Patreon page, Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama is one of the latest names on Blackburn Rovers’ radar.

Wednesday are short on cash and will have to liquidate some critical assets to pay player salaries and an outstanding HMRC debt.

Gassama is one of their most valuable assets, and their current issue has triggered a Rovers inquiry.

A fee has not been agreed upon, and the deal may not take place, but Gassama would earn roughly £2.5 million and might leave for pastures new.

A important asset of Sheffield

Wednesday. Sheffield Wednesday have had a disastrous run in recent seasons, but there has been an effort to get more sellable assets onto the books in some cases.

Gassama is undoubtedly one of them, having joined the PSG junior setup in 2023. He is far from completed, but the 21-year-old has grown in stature, prompting Blackburn Rovers to express an interest.

Gassama, an aggressive midfielder who can play out wide or centrally, scored eight goals and assisted once in 47 games across all competitions last season.

Blackburn Rovers seek to fill Tyrhys Dolan’s vacancy.

Tyrhys Dolan’s contract with Blackburn Rovers has now officially expired, though he may yet re-sign after holding off on signing elsewhere for the time being.

However, a move for Gassama might result in the former Premier League champions signing Dolan’s direct replacement.

The ex-PSG prospect, like Dolan, can play out wide or in attacking midfield, and he, too, is a sellable commodity with the potential to generate a significant profit in the future. That will be very enticing to Rovers, as Dolan is leaving on a free transfer.
