This week, Sheffield Wednesday announced that they were investing heavily in the playing surfaces at Hillsborough and their training facility at Middlewood Road. The stadium pitch is undergoing treatment that goes beyond standard end-of-season maintenance as it nears the end of what has been called a 10-year cycle. In an effort to lower the chance of player injury, work is being done concurrently on both training pitches to make them feel and feel harder.
New surfaces are being laid around the playing surface in an effort led by new head groundsperson Lee Jackson, who has thanked the club for their support of the new projects. There are also indications from within the club that fans will notice an aesthetic change when they look out onto the field from their seats within the stadium.
“We’re going to standardize that around the edge,” he told club media, adding, “because of the whole sustainability aspect of rubber crumbing on artificial pitches, we’re taking that away completely. A lot of it is wasted space and space that gets damaged with our stuff in terms of mowers on grass in front of advertising boards and what have you.”
As Wednesday looks to the future, a stretch of artificial turf that once ran along the touchline in front of the South Stand will be removed and replaced with grass. This change may also lessen the risk of player injury. According to Jackson, the modifications will modify how the field appears from the stands and on television and may lead to additional commercial income from advertising.
He went on: “We’re also expanding the grass area on the south side by one meter, so when a ball partially goes out, the player at least has his foot on real grass instead of artificial, because that’s necessary.” “We wish to make it future-proof. Advertising on the field perimeters is something you see at other facilities, and with the carpet installed, we will have greater room to do so if we so want, possibly increasing the club’s earnings as well.
I’m putting this pitch together, the entire specification, for the next ten years, but we’re future-proofing ourselves since it’s neither required nor regulated.
It’s for that long-range goal. You must plan far in advance; it is not for the next year or the next two years. Since we’re investing a significant sum of money, it must be used appropriately and sensibly. The club has done an excellent job of supporting the necessary work, and I’m eager to see what happens when everything is operational in a few weeks.
