Sheffield Wednesday must eye Spaniard as potential Danny Rohl replacement

There is no finer illustration of the Championship’s ridiculous season than the management mayhem that is unfolding right in front of us.

It is conceivable that before the beginning of the following season, 25% of the managers who were in charge of their teams at the end of the 2024–25 Championship season will have left.

According to reports, even Leeds United, who won the championship, were thinking about firing manager Daniel Farke.

Ruben Selles, who assisted in keeping Hull City from relegation, is scheduled to be terminated at the MKM Stadium in the most recent axe swing.

Although the Spaniard’s departure has not been formally announced as of this writing, it would be shocking if the former Reading manager remained in his current role.

Last summer, Hull tried the same thing with Liam Rosenior, and it completely failed.

Clubs like RC Strasbourg, which later hired the 40-year-old, should set themselves up to attempt and profit from their irrational choices if they don’t want to learn from their mistakes.

Sheffield Wednesday, whose own manager is unlikely to remain this summer, should take advantage of the Tigers’ lack of initiative under Selles.

Sheffield Wednesday is unlikely to keep Danny Rohl

The Owls nearly faced a three-window transfer ban in April for failing to pay their players on time. They managed to avoid any penalties by sending the salaries just in time.

Since then, it seems as though Danny Rohl, their first-team manager, has been considering a future outside of Hillsborough and has been gradually removing himself from the club.

He has made the decision to leave the club, according to TalkSPORT. The manager claimed in a podcast interview that he and Chansiri had reached a consensus on the German’s future, but the club rejected this.

His outspoken remarks about wanting to join the Premier League or Bundesliga in the future have been the most obvious of all his clues.

Sheffield Wednesday ought to seize the chance presented by Ruben Selles.

Rohl’s contract expires in the summer of 2027, and Wednesday has not been linked to any replacements. In the meantime, he has been linked to Southampton, RB Leipzig, and Leicester City. The same is true for Hull. According to reports, they do not yet have a substitute for Selles.

The Owls may benefit from the combination of these two elements.

Selles has a youthful, dynamic, and EFL-proven manager who has already achieved success with a more dysfunctional Reading club than Wednesday.

Ruben Selles’ record in his last two jobs
Club Games in charge Wins Draws Losses Points per game
Hull City (12/24 – pres) 28 9 7 12 1.21
Reading (07/23 – 12/24) 78 35 14 29 1.53

The Spaniard seems like a clear choice to take Rohl’s place if he leaves, but it will be difficult to find someone who can match the German and all of his incredible attributes.

They would be able to obtain Selles without having to pay any compensation.

The two stadiums are just 70 miles apart, so he wouldn’t be traveling that far to get from one club to another.

In this case, Wednesday would have to wait for Rohl to be snatched up or depart on his own, which could make them susceptible to someone obtaining Selles before them, but they should be prepared for that possibility.

The only issue is, why wouldn’t Wednesday look to replace Rohl with the soon-to-be former Hull manager?
