Sheffield Wednesday open talks over new goalkeeper contract, other clubs keen

The Star reports that although Sheffield Wednesday’s Jack Phillips is attracting interest from other teams, negotiations are underway to extend his contract.

With four games remaining, Sheffield Wednesday is in 14th place and will finish the 2024–25 Championship campaign in mid-table. The slim prospects of making it to the playoffs vanished in favor of SWFC.

Although the ownership and manager Danny Rohl’s future are uncertain, the pertinent club officials must continue to concentrate on making plans for the upcoming campaign.

The Star has provided an update on goalkeeper Jack Phillips’ future amid growing rumors about players departing and those being handed new contracts. Contract decisions are being made over a number of the Owls’ young players.

Sheffield Wednesday is reportedly in talks to extend the 19-year-old goalie’s contract. He signed from Southampton in 2022, according to The Star.

Other teams are interested in Phillips, but SWFC is eager to keep the young player. Although he hasn’t yet made his senior debut for Wednesday, he has been a mainstay for the U21s this season and has traveled to a few Championship games.

A well-defined path for gifted goalkeepers

Phillips appears to be another promising goalkeeping talent for Sheffield Wednesday. Over the years, they have seen a number one come and go, but James Beadle has secured the starting spot in the last season and a half.

The former Charlton Athletic player, who is on loan from Brighton, has gained significant experience at Hillsborough, but in recent weeks, Pierce Charles has replaced him.

The SWFC young player has long been predicted to be the Owls’ number one in the future and is expected to have a bright future in the game.

He may have the chance to solidify his starting spot in the upcoming season, which would demonstrate to Phillips that there is a road for him to advance and succeed in the Steel City.

What will Phillips do next?

Phillips may be set to make the transition to the senior game next season after finding playing time with the U21s this season.

Of course, discussing a first-team breakthrough with Sheffield Wednesday is a bit premature.

However, they might send him out on loan to get experience while they look for a more seasoned Charles backup during the transfer window.

However, there is a likelihood that no loan transfer will be done. Charles was developed by Wednesday in their own youth divisions, and he has solely experienced senior football under their supervision thus far, without requesting a loan.
