Sheffield Wednesday: Players intend to terminate contracts over unpaid wages

Sheffield Wednesday: Players intend to terminate contracts over unpaid wages.

Sheffield Wednesday failed to pay their senior players on time for the third time in four months this week; FIFA regulations indicate that any player who does not get their payment on the correct date for two consecutive months can have their contract terminated.

Several Sheffield Wednesday players have indicated that they intend to cancel their contracts and leave as free agents this month due to a pay disagreement with the club, Sky Sports News understands.

This week marked the third time in the last four months that the club failed to pay its key players on schedule. It is understood that only U21 players received their June salaries on time. According to FIFA regulations, any player who has not received their salary on the due date for two consecutive months may cancel their contract by giving their employer written notice.

The club then has 15 days to retake control of any player’s contract by paying the unpaid balance.

A handful of Wednesday players are said to have reacted to the new postponement by submitting their notice. The Professional Footballers’ Association is working closely with Wednesday’s players and has communicated frequently throughout the process.

Its assistance has strengthened the sense that individuals who wish to escape will be safe. On Monday afternoon, the club wrote to players and staff, apologising for not paying them on time. They have promised to make all outstanding payments, but there is no certainty as to when this will happen.

According to Sky Sports News, the club hopes to resolve these overdue payments within the next two weeks. The PFA declined to comment. Sheffield Wednesday has been sought for comment.
