Sheffield Wednesday run serious embargo risk as nervy wages wait ensues

Sheffield Wednesday may well be on the brink of a three-window transfer ban due to unpaid wages.

The Owls are, unfortunately, no stranger to late payments – an issue that has reared its head on a number of occasions – and having fell foul both with wages and tax payments over the last year they find themselves one default day away from a lengthy embargo.

Players and employees were supposed to get paid today, the last working day of the month, but The Star is aware that at least some have not received their money as of this writing. It is thought that those with lesser incomes did, however.

Wednesday faced the same issue at the end of March, but they might not be as fortunate this time around because Dejphon Chansiri paid the players and staff only before the deadline that would have led to the suspension. In order to prevent the ban, everyone must be paid in full.

Sheffield Wednesday could face a three-window ban

For individuals who owe money, technically it is still payday, and if they are paid tomorrow, it would still be considered before the end of the month. It is thought that the “30 day rule” will take effect once the club has had two days following the initial default to either pay up or notify the league.

According to the EFL’s explanation, a club is subject to the “30-day rule” if they “default on payments for a period of 30 days or more in any 12-month period,” which is defined as July 1 through June 30. Additionally, they clarify that “this can refer to one default of 30 days, or a number of individual defaults which when taken together amount to 30 days.” This implies that the late payments made by Wednesday to HM Revenue and Customs are also taken into account.

The next penalty is a suspension for “three full transfer windows,” starting on the day of the “persistent default.” Wednesday will have been fined the greater of either “£6,000 or 5% of the outstanding sum due” when they reached 20 days, whenever that may have been.
