Sheffield Wednesday weighing up move to sign Konate

Sheffield Wednesday are enduring something of an uncertain summer, both on and off the pitch, but there are now reports that the Owls have taken a look at young midfielder Mohamed Konate.

It now appears that, unless the 36-year-old German decides to leave the club, he will remain in command at Hillsborough during pre-season and the start of next season. Talks between Rohl and club players are apparently scheduled to ‘clear the air’ and clarify the situation.

Club owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri has once again been rumored to want to sell the club, yet he has struggled to reach an agreement, owing to off-the-field difficulties such as the team being under a transfer embargo and players having given their notice.

Despite this, it has recently been rumored that they have lined up a possible target for this summer’s transfer window.

Wednesday take a look at midfielder Konate

According to The Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday are looking into Mohamed Konate, with the possibility of signing him this summer.

According to the story, the 20-year-old trained with the club at England’s headquarters, St George’s Park, but it is unclear whether that term will be prolonged.

Konate is a free agent, having left Portuguese third-tier club SC Covilha this summer. He helped them avoid relegation from Liga 3 in 2024/25.

The embargo imposed on Wednesday means that they will be unable to pay a price for a player for the next three transfer windows, with only free agents and loan transactions excluding a loan fee permitted. They are also subject to a £7,000 weekly wage cap.

Konate began his career at Ivory Coast’s FC OSA before moving to Portugal’s Vilarinho and Oliveira Douro for the 2023/24 season. He was thereafter without a club until his transfer to Covilha in December 2024.

Turbulent summer for Sheffield Wednesday

With continuous uncertainty surrounding Rohl and the likely state of the Sheffield Wednesday team by the time they open off their Championship campaign against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium next month, a few players have already left.

Loanees James Beadle, Shea Charles, last season’s Player of the Year, and Toulouse winger Ibrahim Cissoko have all left, while experienced players Stuart Armstrong, Ben Hamer, and Marvin Johnson, as well as Ryo Hatsuse, have all left at the end of their contracts.

It has also been announced in recent days that Anthony Musaba has signed for Turkish Super Lig club Samsunspor for an undisclosed amount.

This summer, Hillsborough is anticipated to lose a few more players, and there is growing anxiety about the club’s current state of instability.
