Sheffield Wednesday will surely live to regret Josh Windass exit as Wrexham close in on deal

Josh Windass has quickly found a new club, with Wrexham ready to sign the former Sheffield Wednesday player.

Despite all of the drama at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, things took a serious turn for the worst late last week when Windass and Michael Smith terminated their own contracts.

Dejphon Chansiri’s refusal to pay players on time allowed them to leave their contracts and join new teams ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Both players appear to have received offers, with Smith being pursued by Middlesbrough and Windass finally settling on his dream move to Wrexham.

Josh Windass will have a medical at Wrexham following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday

According to Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport, Windass is now scheduled to have a physical with Wrexham on Monday after agreeing to personal terms with the Red Dragons.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is claimed to have spoken to Windass remotely over the weekend while on tour in Australia and New Zealand, persuading him to join the Welsh revolution.

Coventry City, Derby County, Leicester City, and Norwich City have all expressed interest in signing the 31-year-old, and Windass has stated that he will make a decision this weekend.

Windass has been quiet since leaving on Wednesday, refusing to give any media interviews out of respect for the supporters at S6. Clearly, he has been completely focused on figuring out his future move, and the thought of joining the project at Wrexham is incredibly exciting for both Windass and his new club.

Sheffield Wednesday could have been on level with Wrexham; unfortunately, they will be left behind.

For Wrexham, he is a signing with genuine Championship experience who will bring goals and creativity, as well as the leadership and mindset required to survive in the second tier.

However, for Wednesday, it’s just another dismal indication of how fast and dramatically the team has slid down the Championship rankings.

Following a 12th-place finish last season, the Owls should have been planning a promotion bid this season. That is true in an ideal world, but the current scenario at Hillsborough is nothing short of a nightmare.

Wrexham should have been the type of club Wednesday hoped to finish above next season, but as things worsen for the Owls, they will most certainly be looking up at Wrexham from the relegation zone.

After a few years of smart planning, savvy investment, and great momentum, one club is demonstrating ambition and progress. The other is currently on a downward spiral with no prospects of stopping.
