Woodbridge Road, a key route connecting Ipswich with east Suffolk, will face significant disruption due to upcoming gas main works.

Sections of the road will be closed over a six-month period starting 22 April, as gas distributor Cadent replaces 1.8 miles (3km) of old gas pipes. The project is expected to be completed by October.

The works will be carried out in phases along a 1.1-mile (1.7km) stretch of Woodbridge Road, with traffic lights and side-road closures in place throughout the duration.

According to Cadent, the current “ageing metallic gas pipes,” some dating back to 1907, will be replaced with “tough new plastic ones.”

Project manager Gary Tidman acknowledged the inconvenience, stating:

“We know it’s far from ideal to have any sort of road closures or traffic management in such a busy area, but we’ve worked closely with local authorities to create a plan that keeps traffic flowing and ensures access for local businesses and residents.”

He added that Cadent has scheduled key phases during school half-term and summer holidays to minimize disruption, and the company will continue to collaborate with the Highways Agency to monitor progress and adjust plans if needed.
