Sky Sports pundit urges Huddersfield Town to land “statement” double Preston North End transfer coup

Brad Potts and Jack Whatmough are apparently the targets of a double raid by Huddersfield Town on Preston North

End, but it looks like they may have a difficult time landing the latter.

With no fewer than seven new players joining the team at Accu Stadium, the Terriers have been extremely active

throughout the summer transfer window thus far, giving them a slight advantage over many of their League One

rivals.

There’s been a mix of experienced signings as well as players in their early 20’s who could develop into a lot better

than third tier level – one player who drops into the former category is Ryan Ledson, who left Preston at the end of

his contract and dropped down a level to join Town and new manager Lee Grant.

Huddersfield Town backed to sign PNE’s Jack Whatmough & Brad Potts in double deal

Though Sean Roughan, Murray Wallace, Joe Low, and Josh Feeney already have a strong group of signings in that

area of the field, Alan Nixon revealed last week that the West Yorkshire team was looking to add experienced centre-

back Whatmough to the team. This suggests that Ledson is not the only player to join Huddersfield from Deepdale.

The versatile PNE midfielder/wing-back Potts was also said to be a target for Huddersfield, with Nixon subsequently

declaring that a deal for Whatmough is very much “on” and that they hope to pay approximately £250,000 for the

28-year-old.

However, according to the Lancashire Post, Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom is eager to keep Potts at the club,

so Huddersfield’s advances for the 31-year-old have been rejected. It has also been disclosed that, although it is

commonly believed that Potts has one year left on his contract, PNE has the option to extend the player’s contract

into 2027 if they so choose.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, current Sky Sports analyst Lee Hendrie thinks that if Huddersfield

were able to sign both Whatmough and Potts, they would be demonstrating their aspirations for the forthcoming

campaign in a significant way, even though only one of the two now appears certain.

“Jack Whatmough and Brad Potts being linked with Huddersfield – I think this would be a real good couple of

signings,” Hendrie said to FLW.

“Very solid; you know what you’re getting from them, and since they play in League One, you can see that they have

the potential to become important players in that league if they do.

“So yes, really good additions these would be, and I think probably a bit of a statement of where they’re going and

what they’re trying to achieve this season having been disappointing last season – I think these would be very, very

good signings.”

Huddersfield Town should continue to push for Brad Potts deal – he could be one of the best midfielders in League One

You get the impression that Whatmough would be a top League One centre-back despite the fact that he hasn’t

featured frequently in the Championship for PNE and has struggled with injuries over the past two years. He is

expected to move to Huddersfield this summer.

Based on the type of players that Lee Grant has brought in thus far, Huddersfield will probably play a 3-5-2 this

season. With Potts now a target, he may play as a box-to-box midfielder or a right wing-back.

Since Pol Valentin joined Deepdale and Hull City’s Cody Drameh was also targeted in the summer transfer window,

even though he has spent the majority of the last few years playing wing-back at North End, Heckingbottom started

using him there a little more frequently than usual last season, which may indicate that’s where he sees his role this

season.

It would be a huge coup for Grant and owner Kevin Nagle if Potts, who has a tonne of Championship experience,

were persuaded to drop a level and play frequently for Huddersfield. This would let him to reunite with one of his

greatest friends, Ryan Ledson.
