Southampton Make Contact to Sign 6 ft 5 Former Premier League Winner
Southampton could spring a surprise move for Premier League veteran Asmir Begovic in the summer transfer window, according to reports – with the Saints keen on bolstering their goalkeeping ranks amid uncertainty over the future of their current contingent.
The Saints were relegated from the Premier League with a measly 12 points, only beating Derby County’s record of 11 by the skin of their teeth, and it saw them sack two bosses in new Rangers boss Russell Martin and Ivan Juric, in a season of pure misery. They’ll have to dust themselves down and go again, and that could be with Begovic in their ranks.
Report: Southampton ‘Make Contact’ to Sign Begovic
The Saints have a huge task on their hands to secure promotion once again
The 38-year-old star will be a free agent once his contract on Merseyside runs out, and although he failed to make an appearance for the Toffees last season, Begovic still has a lot to offer, having made 45 appearances for Queens Park Rangers in the Championship the campaign prior.
Southampton are in the market for goalkeeping reinforcements, with Aaron Ramsdale likely to depart the club for a Premier League outfit in the summer transfer window, as well as Joe Lumley being released at the end of his contract.
Begovic has emerged as a target for the Saints due to his experience and free agent nature, and having made 256 appearances in the top-flight throughout his career, he’d be a superb option to have in the Championship in terms of a potential title battle.
Although Begovic would likely only act as a second-choice option, Will Still is likely to need experience to drag his team over the line and Begovic would act as a strong pickup. The Bosnian-born Canada youth international began his professional career at local rivals Portsmouth, before venturing on loan spells across the EFL – landing at Stoke City in 2009.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Asmir Begovic has 63 caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This was where he spent the best years of his career, being the first-choice stopper at the Britannia Stadium for half a decade before later stints at Chelsea, where he won the Premier League, alongside Bournemouth and AC Milan – landing at Everton where he made 10 appearances before moving to QPR and then back to Merseyside.
