Plenty remains up in the air regarding Sheffield Wednesday’s preparations for next season, The Star understands.
Early this month, the Owls concluded a remarkable season of advancement, finishing in 12th place, which tied their best table performance in eight years and was a fourth straight year-over-year gain in league position.
Following a tumultuous few months, it became more evident that manager Danny Röhl believed his future lay outside of Hillsborough as the season came to a close. The German coach told media he had told the team of his “decision” a few weeks prior to the last day’s game at Watford. The Star has good cause to think that these discussions happened in early April.
Bundesliga team Werder Bremen is the most recent manager-hunting club rumored to have admired the gifted German coach. Reports of interest in Röhl from both English and German clubs have supported Wednesday’s summer thus far.
It is generally accepted that a multi-million pound compensation charge is linked to a Röhl exit under the provisions of a contract that expires in the summer of 2027. As The Star has been reporting for a few weeks, it is thought that Wednesday and chairman Dejphon Chansiri will continue to operate under the terms of that arrangement for as long as possible.
According to our friends at BBC Sheffield, Röhl and Werder Bremen have had “positive talks,” but sources have told them that “excessive and prohibitive” demands have kept the interest from progressing.
Though any formal movements are as of yet unclear, recruitment plans are understood to be underway ahead of the start of the window at the turn of the month, with Owls head of recruitment Kevin Beadell in situ heading into the summer. Decisions regarding the composition of any backroom team will soon need to be made, as several top employees are understood to have contracts expiring at the end of June. Some Wednesday coaches are thought to have drawn interest from other places.
Last year, on June 28, Wednesday made a comeback to Middlewood Road for preliminary testing and the start of their preseason schedule. The Star has reason to suspect that players have not yet been given a definitive return date, which is one month from the comparable date this time. Senior friendlies and training camps, which are usually advertised starting in mid-June, have not yet been made public.
