State of play in Norwich City’s number one goalkeeper search

State of play in Norwich City’s number one goalkeeper search.

Norwich City’s transfer priorities this summer include the acquisition of a new first-choice custodian, and efforts are underway to find Angus Gunn’s replacement.

The Canaries have already added Dan Grimshaw to their goalkeeping roster, but they need a new number one. Our City reporters met to examine the most recent developments in that quest. Host Adam Harvey was joined by Samuel Seaman and Connor Southwell to cover all of the major subjects, including the Canaries’ search of Angus Gunn’s replacement at Carrow Road. AH: Connor, let’s start with incomings and the custodian position, because there’s been a lot of movement in that area over the last week in terms of speculations and links. Just let us know what’s going on in the goalkeeping department right now.

CS: As we reported earlier this week, they are still evaluating goalkeeping possibilities. It appears that they are currently focussing mostly on three choices. Obviously, two of them are public. I am sure there are other targets in the background being considered as well. They certainly include Vladan Kovacevic and Jakub Stolarczyk, and I believe there will be others on the list as well. There were suggestions this week that a bid for Leicester’s custodian had been submitted. That is where we find ourselves with him. I know a lot has been said about that at the Leicester end. Why bid on someone who has recently signed an extension?

It’s obviously an intriguing dynamic with him since he played 10 Premier League games for Leicester, and they’re in a really unique scenario. I believe there was a lot of buzz about Ruud van Nistelrooy and his position, and there is a general sense of unease. People watching will understand that bids do not go in without some communication that whoever they’re bidding on, whether it’s coaches, as we recently saw, will be amenable to that bid. Clearly, what makes this a difficult component is the Leicester dimension and where he fits in with everything. I believe he is one of a few who are still being assessed. I don’t think he’s the one that Norwich City are hell bent on trying to get at this stage.

AH: Sam was the only other custodian linked last night. Just to be clear, Filip Marschall, the Aston Villa custodian. What’s the latest on him?

SS: He is not one of Norwich’s current targets. As for whether it was agent-led, you don’t want to speculate too much. However, when multiple teams are involved, it often feels like that. But I believe the report in question stated that he would be coming in as a backup to a more seasoned custodian. Obviously, it is Dan Grimshaw’s plan. So I’m not sure if he was someone they looked at a long time ago. Obviously, they have a lot of names on their radar. But right now, when number one is their priority, they believe they have a second choice in the Grimshaw building. But you can see why when Norwich are so clearly and so publicly looking for a new goalkeeper, why maybe certain people would be interested in linking certain players with covering that position.

You consider his career thus far, his age, and his profile. I believe he spent last season on loan with Crewe in League Two. So it would have been a tall order for him to step in and replace an experienced Championship custodian like Angus Gunn. When you examine some of the other names linked with Norwich and who they’re looking at, Stolarczyk played in the Premier League last season, while Kovacevic played for Legia in Poland’s top tier before joining Sporting Lisbon. So, someone who played in League Two last season does not appear to fit the characteristics of a new number one.
