Stuart Armstrong to Aberdeen transfer leaves former mentor floored after surprise text

After receiving an unexpected SMS, Stuart Armstrong’s transfer to Aberdeen leaves his former coach in shock.

Stuart Armstrong has been waiting 17 years to play for Aberdeen, but after joining Jimmy Thelin’s team earlier this week, his opportunity has finally come.

Fans were taken aback by his transfer, but none were as surprised as his former mentor, who on Tuesday night received an unexpected text message. “Stuart is currently in Aberdeen undergoing a medical,” it said, leaving Len Nicol stunned after looking at his phone. Since he mentored the Scotland great before he entered the professional ranks, the founder of Dyce Boys Club is well acquainted with Armstrong, according to Record Sport.
Even though Armstrong’s father, Guy, had sent the text, Len wasn’t completely sure until later Tuesday night, when Aberdeen formally confirmed the deal. When Armstrong was at Dyce, the Dons had taken him on a few trials but ultimately chose not to sign him. The 33-year-old midfielder has now agreed to a two-year contract at Pittodrie following a stellar career that saw him win everything at Celtic, move to the Premier League with Southampton, and earn 51 Scotland matches.

“I’m really happy and it was a total surprise,” Nicol stated. Stuart’s father sent me a note informing me that his son is currently in Aberdeen for a medical examination. He said, “Believe!” when I expressed my disbelief, of course. The club then confirmed that Stuart had signed a few hours later. To be honest, I was incredulous. “It just seemed to be something that we all hoped to see him in an Aberdeen shirt but I don’t think we ever expected it to happen.”
