Black Cats’ Premier League Return Could Trigger Squad Overhaul
Fresh off their dramatic return to the Premier League via a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in last month’s Championship play-off final, Sunderland AFC are already facing the prospect of a significant squad reshuffle.
While the triumph at Wembley ended a seven-year exile from the top flight, the club’s return to the big stage might come at a cost—with several key players being linked to exits.
The £10 million transfer of Tommy Watson to Brighton, confirmed back in April, has already kicked off what could be a turbulent summer window. And with six more top performers reportedly attracting serious interest from clubs across Europe, manager Régis Le Bris may soon have a major rebuilding job on his hands.
Here’s a breakdown of the six Sunderland players currently on the radar of other clubs:

1. Jobe Bellingham – Dortmund Calling?
The name alone turns heads, but Jobe Bellingham has carved out his own reputation this season as one of Sunderland’s standout talents. The 19-year-old midfield engine—and younger brother of Jude Bellingham—has emerged as a priority target for Borussia Dortmund.
Although his release clause is said to be £33.7 million, it’s believed Dortmund could negotiate a lower fee, especially given the strong relationship between the player’s camp and the Bundesliga outfit.
2. Trai Hume – Premier League and La Liga Suitors Circle
Reliable, composed, and consistent, Trai Hume has drawn admiring glances from multiple top-flight clubs. Wolves and Everton are reportedly interested, alongside several La Liga clubs.
The 23-year-old full-back played a crucial role throughout the promotion campaign, known for his clutch defending and calmness under pressure.
3. Chris Rigg – Teenage Sensation on Everyone’s Radar
Still just 17 years old, Chris Rigg has impressed well beyond his years in the Championship. The academy graduate has already drawn comparisons to some of the league’s most polished midfielders.
His performances have caught the attention of Everton, but he’s also been linked with a host of elite Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Newcastle United.
4. Dan Neil – Roma Interested in Club Captain
Sunderland skipper Dan Neil is reportedly attracting serious interest from Serie A giants Roma. The 23-year-old midfielder, a product of Sunderland’s academy, has just one year left on his contract.
With a market valuation of £6 million per Transfermarkt, the club may consider cashing in to avoid losing him on a free next summer.
5. Chris Mepham – Loan Spell Ending, Future Unclear
Chris Mepham was a key figure in Sunderland’s backline this season, having joined on loan from Bournemouth last August. The 27-year-old centre-back quickly became a fan favourite for his composure and leadership.
However, with no permanent deal currently in place, Mepham is expected to return to the Cherries unless Sunderland table a compelling offer.
6. Romaine Mundle – PSG and Nice Monitoring Young Winger
Having only arrived in February from Standard Liege, Romaine Mundle has made a swift impression at the Stadium of Light. The 22-year-old left-winger is now being linked with a potential switch to PSV Eindhoven or OGC Nice.
Though he has three years remaining on his current deal, Sunderland could be tempted if the right bid comes in. That said, there is no urgency to sell, with the club reportedly keen to develop Mundle as part of their Premier League setup.
Big Summer Ahead at the Stadium of Light
As the transfer window ramps up, Sunderland’s recruitment team face the challenge of balancing retention with reinforcements. With top clubs circling and top talents already on the move, the Black Cats must act swiftly to build on their momentum—or risk entering the Premier League undermanned.
