Sunderland are not currently pursuing a deal for Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson, according to reporter Keith Downie on X.
Sunderland have been linked with an ambitious move for the veteran this summer. SAFC are prepared for life in the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship.
Henderson, 34, came up through the Black Cats’ academy. He is now on the books of Ajax and has a year remaining on his contract in Amsterdam.
In the most recent report, journalist Downie has ruled out an immediate return to the Stadium of Light. However, he has not ruled out Regis Le Bris’ team taking a look at him later in the window. Downie made an appearance on X: “SAFC are currently not pursuing Jordan Henderson, but that doesn’t mean they won’t consider a move later in the window – depending on circumstances.”
According to The Northern Echo, Le Bris stated about their recruitment plans: “I believe we are still establishing our structure here at Sunderland. Now we’ll have to take another step ahead.
“We’ll have to do that to get the squad ready for the Premier League.” We’ll find out in the next days and weeks what that looks like. Can the club take the next step? “I hope so.”

Sunderland will understand the importance of bringing in the proper characters. SAFC must be prepared for the transition to the top division.
Henderson worked his way up through their development systems before playing 79 first-team games as a youngster, scoring five goals before being loaned out to Coventry City. Liverpool eventually lured him away in 2011.
During his stint at Anfield, the former England international appeared in 492 matches across all competitions and scored 33 goals. He has won the league title, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, and the Champions League.
What now for Sunderland and Jordan Henderson?
Henderson left Liverpool in 2023 and moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Al-Ettifaq. He has since joined Ajax and played 57 games for the Eredivisie giants.
As Downie mentioned, Sunderland will not make any attempts to sign him at this time. A future swoop has not been ruled out, however.
The Black Cats defeated Sheffield United in the second-tier play-off final last month. They defeated the Blades 2-1 at Wembley Stadium, with Tommy Watson scoring the winning goal in the dying moments.
