Sunderland and Sheffield United eye transfer battle for attacker with 23 goal contributions in 24/25 – reports

Sunderland Among Several Clubs Tracking Peterborough Star Kwame Poku

Sunderland are reportedly one of several clubs expressing strong interest in Kwame Poku, the talented attacker currently plying his trade at Peterborough United, according to recent reports.

The 23-year-old winger enjoyed a standout campaign for the League One side, despite the team’s struggles overall. Poku racked up an impressive 12 goals and 11 assists in just 31 appearances across all competitions, even as Peterborough slipped to an underwhelming 18th-place finish in the third tier.

His performances have not gone unnoticed. With the EFL season now wrapped up, speculation around Poku’s future is beginning to intensify, and multiple clubs are expected to push hard for his signature in the coming weeks.

Peterborough Chairman Confirms Widespread Interest

Peterborough chairman Barry Fry confirmed the high level of interest in Poku when speaking over the weekend. The club’s director of football revealed that over two dozen teams are tracking the forward, a testament to his rising stock.

“The last time I heard, there were 26 clubs in for him. I’m not surprised. The kid has what it takes to reach the Premier League. We have developed him over the past four years to the point where he is ready to take the next step in his career.”

Sunderland, Sheffield United & Birmingham in the Mix

According to Football League World, Birmingham City have already made a formal offer to sign Poku. Meanwhile, both Sunderland and Sheffield United are also keeping tabs on the situation.

Now that Sunderland have earned promotion to the Premier League, the club’s improved financial position could play a key role in giving them an edge in negotiations—should they choose to act on their interest and submit a bid.

Contract Expiry Fuels Transfer Momentum

Poku is currently set to become a free agent this summer, which means Peterborough are likely to lose him regardless of whether they want to keep him or not. If he ends up joining another club within England, Peterborough will hope to receive compensation via tribunal.

However, if Poku moves abroad—including to Scottish clubs such as Celtic or Rangers, both of whom are reportedly monitoring him—the compensation would likely be minimal, making a move north of the border a more cost-effective option for potential suitors.

Le Bris Outlines Sunderland’s Transfer Strategy

Speaking earlier this month at a press conference, Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris offered insight into the club’s summer planning. He revealed that the team had been preparing for two possible transfer strategies, depending on whether they secured Premier League promotion or remained in the Championship.

“We’re working on two plans [one for the Premier League and one for the Championship]. The main focus is on the play-offs but at the same time we still have a lot to do and speak regularly with Kristjaan [Speakman], Kyril [Louis-Dreyfus] and the recruitment structure. We have regular meetings, I have one this afternoon for example, it’s all part of the process.”
