Regis Le Bris ‘surprised’ by Aji Alese’s Sunderland injury return

Regis Le Bris expressed amazement at Aji Alese’s comeback from injury for Sunderland.

When Alese sustained a catastrophic injury in the FA Cup loss to Stoke back in January, there was no guarantee that he would return before the season ended and the playoffs.

However, the 24-year-old’s quick recovery has taken club officials by surprise, and on Sunday, he is expected to train with Romaine Mundle, who is making a comeback.

“He’s worked really hard to be back,” Le Bris said of Alese.

“But he was really positive, worked well and it’s really good for us to have Aji with us.”

Prior to missing time due to an ankle injury, Alese played a significant role for Sunderland in the first stages of the season. After his November comeback, he experienced his second setback a few months later.

Ballard is back, and Dennis Cirkin is back at left-back, thus Alese won’t be starting for Sunderland in the playoffs. However, the defender’s comeback is still a plus, and he will offer vital cover in the coming weeks.
