Writing on X, Ornstein stated: *”Granit Xhaka informs Bayer Leverkusen he only wants to join Sunderland as club-to-club talks continue. Agreement now in place between 32-year-old and SAFC. Bayer Leverkusen asked by Switzerland midfielder to close deal rapidly. Negotiations ongoing.”*

Xhaka’s agent, Jose Noguera, later confirmed the player’s desire to return to the Premier League, telling GiveMeSport“We have reached an agreement in principle with Sunderland on terms. Granit wishes to move back to the Premier League. It is an exciting new challenge for him. Now an agreement is needed with Leverkusen.”

He understands his importance to them and is fully respectful of the process.”
