Sunderland man Romaine Mundle returned from the bench in the play-off second leg but he is a massive doubt for the final, say the Sunderland Echo.
This weekend, Sunderland will meet Sheffield United in the play-off final, which is a crucial matchup. SAFC has had a fantastic season, surpassing expectations with their fourth-place result.
Dan Ballard’s header in the 122nd minute gave the Black Cats a spectacular way to guarantee their place at Wembley. Romaine Mundle’s injured return in extra time appeared to turn the tide following a lackluster showing in the second leg against Coventry City.
Most Sunderland supporters wanted Mundle to start at Wembley after his return, but it looks like those dreams have been crushed. Mundle is reportedly a serious doubt for Saturday’s match, according to the Sunderland Echo.
The winger’s participation is uncertain because he hasn’t trained since last Tuesday’s semi-final victory. As he intensifies his training, they have indicated that he may readily participate in the days ahead.
SAFC will have the same roster at their disposal as they had in the semifinals. Aji Alese had a possibility of returning for the play-offs, but that does not look to be the case despite his extended absence.
Despite playing most of both matches, Patrick Roberts is also being watched because he is still dealing with a calf ailment.
Le Fee out wide again?
The Championship’s most notable acquisition during the January transfer window was Enzo Le Fee. But because he must play out of position, we haven’t seen him at his best in a Sunderland shirt yet.
Both Le Fee and Mundle sustained injuries that prevented them from playing together until last Tuesday’s games. It is a great tragedy for SAFC, as they would have been much more effective moving forward with both players healthy and playing.
When Le Fee has been on the field, his talent has continued to be apparent. He may make the difference for them on Saturday night thanks to the two assists he received in the two games against Coventry.
A last dance for Watson?
Due to Mundle’s injury, Tommy Watson might get one last chance. With a transfer to Brighton at the end of the current campaign, Watson’s future is already set.
SAFC supporters feel he has jumped ship too hastily, and this move has left them with a bad taste in their mouths.
He will undoubtedly be pardoned, though, if he scores a goal to advance them to the Premier League.
