Sunderland face nightmare scenario this summer as Jobe Bellingham stance becomes clear amid Borussia Dortmund links

Sunderland’s performance in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United will have a significant impact on their summer transfer business, and EFL Analysis can exclusively disclose what this implies for Jobe Bellingham’s future.

Sunderland are preparing to meet Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final this weekend, with both clubs hoping to gain Premier League promotion.

The Black Cats face losing several key players this summer, and the club’s transfer squad will face an even more difficult challenge if Sunderland fail to defeat the Blades this week.

Jobe Bellingham, a tough central midfielder from Birmingham City, has been important in Sunderland’s promotion bid this season under Regis Le Bris, but his future on Wearside is in serious doubt.

Borussia Dortmund in pole position to sign Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham

According to EFL Analysis’s transfer expert Graeme Bailey, German club Borussia Dortmund believes they are in prime position to sign Bellingham during the summer transfer window.

It is understood that even if Le Bris’ side is promoted back to the Premier League this weekend at the request of Sheffield United, 19-year-old midfielder Bellingham will leave Wearside.

Earlier this season, we exclusively uncovered former Sunderland coach Mike Dodds’ key role in Bellingham’s future, with his brother Daniel Dodds now serving as Dortmund’s UK scout.

Adding to the Bellingham update, Dortmund officials flew into England ahead of the Championship play-off semi-finals to speak with Bellingham’s camp about a potential summer move, as the German club conducts research on the Sunderland player.

According to Sky Sports Germany writer Patrick Berger, Dortmund is looking to sign Bellingham “immediately” and is planning an offer in the £25-£30 million range

Despite the fact that the Black Cats are only one game away from regaining promotion, Bellingham appears destined to leave Sunderland this summer, and his statistics from the 2024/25 second division campaign demonstrate why a slew of Europe’s best clubs are vying for his services.

Bellingham has been Sunderland’s top performance this season, scoring seven goals in 42 appearances in his second full season on Wearside since arriving in 2023.

Midfielder Bellingham received the Championship Young Player of the Season title and was named to the second-tier’s Team of the Season for the 24/25 season.

Sunderland are hesitant to force regular stars to stay if they choose to leave, as evidenced by Jack Clarke and Ross Stewart both leaving for eight-figure salaries.

Bellingham’s exit would save the club an estimated £25 million and allow it to reinvest in the squad during the summer window, but fans of the red and white will be disappointed to see the charming midfielder leave.
