Sunderland handed huge psychological Wembley boost ahead of play-off final vs Sheffield United

At Wembley Stadium, Sunderland will face Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final.

Before a ball has even been kicked, Sunderland has received a significant boost ahead of their Championship play-off final matchup with Sheffield United next week.

On Saturday, May 24 at 3 p.m., the Black Cats play the Blades; the victor will advance to the Premier League.

Sunderland’s thrilling victory over Coventry City in the semi-final at the Stadium of Light earned them the matchup.

Regis Le Bris’ team has also been given a psychological advantage ahead of the clash next weekend by being assigned to the West Stand at Wembley Stadium.

When their supporters were seated on the west side of the stadium, the Black Cats were 4-0 at Wembley.

The first victory occurred in 1937 when Sunderland defeated Preston North End 3-1 in the FA Cup final to earn their first trophy.

The Black Cats fell behind Preston at halftime but rallied in the second half thanks to goals from Bobby Gurney, Raich Carter, and Eddie Burbanks.

After their historic victory against Leeds United in the final in 1973, Sunderland was then given the west end of Wembley.

Ian Porterfield’s goal in the first half and Jimmy Montgomery’s incredible double save, which is still discussed today, gave Bob Stokoe’s team the victory.

After failing to win any of their subsequent seven visits, the team was given the east end of the stadium.

The 2021 Papa John’s Trophy final saw the Black Cats return to the west side of the stadium, despite the fact that COVID limitations prevented people from attending.

After a 38-year drought at Wembley Stadium, Sunderland won again. Sunderland defeated Southend United 1-0, with Lynden Gooch scoring the game’s lone goal.

The Black Cats made their way back to the capital a year later to meet Wycombe Wanderers in the League One play-off final. The Mackems were thrilled to be assigned to the west stand for the game once more.

With goals from Ross Stewart and Elliot Embleton in a 2-0 victory over Wycombe, Sunderland returned to the Championship and extended their winning streak in the west stand of Wembley Stadium to four games.

When the Black Cats play Sheffield United next week, they will be looking to snap their eight-year Premier League break and make it five straight.
