Sunderland’s search for goalkeeping reinforcements has intensified, with the Black Cats facing stiff competition to secure Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic. The Serbian shot-stopper’s impressive loan spell at Strasbourg last season has put several Premier League clubs on alert, including Bournemouth who are now pushing hard to complete a deal.
Promoted Side’s Keeper Conundrum
While Anthony Patterson proved instrumental in Sunderland’s Championship playoff success – making 90 saves and keeping 14 clean sheets last term – speculation persists about his future. Former chief scout Mick Brown suggested the club might cash in on their 25-year-old keeper, creating potential vacancy between the posts.
Petrovic’s credentials make him an attractive target. The Chelsea loanee recorded a 74.5% save percentage in Ligue 1 last season, conceding just 38 goals in 31 appearances while demonstrating strong command of his area. His distribution (78.8% pass accuracy) and sweeping ability (0.58 actions per 90) would suit Sunderland’s style.

Bournemouth Emerge as Serious Rivals
The Cherries’ urgent need for a keeper following Kepa’s departure to Arsenal has seen them accelerate talks for Petrovic. Chelsea‘s £20m valuation presents a significant hurdle for Sunderland, who must decide whether to meet that price or explore alternatives like Wolves’ Sam Johnstone.
With pre-season underway, time is of the essence. Sunderland’s hierarchy face a critical choice – invest heavily in Petrovic, retain Patterson, or pursue a more budget-friendly option as they prepare for their Premier League return.
