Sunderland missed out on Sassuolo’s Armand Lauriente, but the Black Cats are now considering an intriguing alternative to improve their attack.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, the player in question is Nicolo Zaniolo, who has returned to Galatasaray following unsuccessful loan spells at Fiorentina and Atalanta last season.
According to the outlet, Sunderland is one of the clubs interested in the Italian, who has also been linked with PSV Eindhoven, Villarreal, and Real Oviedo. Multiple Serie A clubs have also made initial contact.
The 26-year-old is said to have impressed during pre-season training with Galatasaray, and while manager Okan Buruk is willing to keep him, an exit is still an option.
The winger’s recent record does not look promising. He was unable to consistently break into the first squad at Fiorentina and Atalanta, and his time at AS Roma resulted in a dramatic breakdown in the two sides’ relationship.
Giallorossi fans protested against the player, who was once regarded as a future star of Italian football before a serious knee injury derailed his progress. Fast forward to present, and he is regarded as a bit of a bad boy in the league; just this year, there were reports of a physical incident in the locker room.
Despite this, Zaniolo is a fascinating player and character, and the support of the Sunderland fans may be exactly what he needs.
