Sunderland make contact to sign “crazy” £34m-rated star, he’d be better than Lauriente

Sunderland fans must be continuously monitoring transfer reports surrounding their busy club this summer.

The daring Premier League new boys have already welcomed six new arrivals into Regis Le Bris’ camp, and fans expected that number to rise to seven when Armand Lauriente’s move from Sassuolo was revealed.

The 18-goal hero had been spotted flying into Wearside to complete a £17 million deal to the Stadium of Light, but things have taken an unexpected turn.

Indeed, Keith Downie, Sky Sports’ north east reporter, stated on Sunday that a deal had been called off after all sides failed to reach an agreement. As a result, Sunderland has chosen to cease negotiations.

Lauriente had traveled to Portugal to join the Black Cats squad for pre-season training, but he has now been forced to return to Italy.

As a result, what comes next for Sunderland?

Sunderland still pursuing £34 million striker

Sunderland’s aggressive approach to the transfer market will eventually slow, but it does not appear to be happening anytime soon.

Indeed, the Mackems are starting over as Sunderland look for someone to fill the void left by Lauriente’s absence from Wearside this summer.

According to journalist Ryan Taylor, Sunderland’s move for Almeria goal machine Luiz Suarez may be revived after previously being on hold.

Indeed, the Spanish club has announced that they will begin negotiations with other clubs for their star player soon, following a stalling on the part of Sporting, who are waiting for Viktor Gyokeres to move to Arsenal before committing to a transfer.

The Black Cats have already made touch over a deal for the £34 million-rated forward, and Burnley has also inquired, as Le Bris’ men hope another statement signing will want to call Wearside home.

Why would Suarez be better than Lauriente?

Lauriente tore the Italian second division to shreds in 33 Serie B encounters last season, culminating in him finishing the campaign with 18 goals and five assists next to his name, as Fabio Grosso’s men were immediately promoted back to Serie A.

Surprisingly, Suarez was even more prolific in the Spanish second division with Almeria in 2024/25, illustrating why Lauriente may not be such a big loss for Sunderland if they can acquire an alternative.

Suarez scored 27 goals and assisted eight others. He also created a whopping ten large opportunities to showcase his creative side.

Indeed, the striker not only has a “crazy” goal-scoring record, as scout Jacek Kulig has previously described him, but he also possesses creativity, exactly like Lauriente.

However, Suarez undoubtedly outperforms in the two most important aspects for a forward: goalscoring and creativity.

He is hardly a one-hit wonder, either, having scored 19 goals in 38 league appearances in the Spanish second tier in 2019/20.

The Almeria star is undoubtedly a prolific forward, and while Le Bris may have missed out on Lauriente, all is not lost for the club. Suarez appears to be a useful skill as well.
