Sunderland make Masuaku their latest summer signing

On Sunday, Sunderland announced the signing of free agent Arthur Masuaku, continuing their summer recruitment campaign.

Masuaku left Turkish team Besiktas at the end of the previous season following three years with the club, one of which was a season-long loan from West Ham United.

The 31-year-old, who left West Ham for Besiktas two years ago, returns to the Premier League and gives the Black Cats top-flight defensive experience.

During his seven-year spell at West Ham, the DR Congo international appeared in 105 Premier League games.

Masuaku will compete at left-back with Dennis Cirkin, who was Regis Le Bris’ first choice during their promotion-winning campaign in 2024-25.

He becomes Sunderland’s eighth summer acquisition, as the Black Cats prepare for their first top-flight season since 2016-17.

Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra, Enzo Le Fee, Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs, Reinildo, and Marc Guiu have all signed with the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland will hope to avoid relegation in their first season back in the Premier League, with Masuaku and Xhaka bringing valuable top-flight experience.

Sunderland’s Premier League campaign begins next Saturday, when they face Masuaku’s previous side West Ham at the Stadium of Light.

Masuaku commented on his move to the Black Cats, saying: “I’m excited to be here, and I’m also very happy to be back in the Premier League.

“I want to bring a winning mentality and joy to the fans, and I’m excited to get started.”
