Sunderland man linked with permanent exit after being left out of top-flight squad

Hibs want to re-sign Nectar Triantis, but Sunderland’s position and new reports cast doubt on the deal

Nectar Triantis has been linked with a permanent return to Hibernian, although there are conflicting rumors over the Sunderland defender’s future.

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon (@reluctantnicko), Hibs are “keen to bring back” Triantis this summer, and the Australian centre-back is expected to be available for a modest amount. Nixon also alleges that the 22-year-old is not a member of Sunderland’s Premier League team for the 2025-26 season and may be sold as part of the club’s ongoing restructuring under Régis Le Bris.

Nixon adds that Hibs may attempt to fund the transaction with proceeds from the sale of Lewis Miller to Stoke City. Triantis is claimed to be “poised to return” to Easter Road, where he spent the previous season on loan. Triantis joined Sunderland from the Central Coast Mariners in the summer of 2023, before moving to Hibs on a half-season loan. That contract was later extended for the entire 2024-25 season. The youthful defender made 34 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish Premiership team, impressing with his physical presence and consistency.

However, Liam Bryce, a journalist with the Hibs Observer, has dismissed speculation of an impending transfer. Bryce stated on social media that “nothing has changed” in the situation and that a return to Hibs “remains unlikely as things stand.” He also stated that Triantis is still active with Sunderland’s squad, despite missing recent pre-season friendly.

While Sunderland is said to be willing to reduce their defensive options, the clubs have yet to reach a formal agreement. Triantis’ future remains uncertain, and it could be determined by further outgoings at the Stadium of Light or further movement from Hibs. Sunderland have yet to bolster their centre-back position in the transfer market, which may have an impact on Triantis.

What more Sunderland-related transfer news is available?

Sunderland are close to completing the loan signing of Chelsea striker Marc Guiu, with new information emerging about a condition in the agreement aimed to ensure regular game time.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea has included a performance-related clause into the agreement, requiring the Black Cats to pay a financial penalty if Guiu does not appear in a specified number of matches during the 2025-26 season.

While such clauses are becoming more regular in Premier League-to-Championship and loan-to-loan transactions, they remain uncommon at the top level. However, reports indicate that Sunderland is satisfied with the deal and does not consider the condition as a serious impediment.

Guiu, 19, joined Chelsea from Barcelona in a £5 million deal last summer. The striker made headlines for scoring his first goal for Barça and is regarded as one of Europe’s most potential centre-forwards his age. Chelsea see the player as a long-term project and want to see him improve through frequent first-team experience.

Sunderland have acted quickly to seize the opportunity, with Régis Le Bris anxious to bolster his attacking options following the club’s elevation to the Premier League. Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor are already on the roster, but Guiu brings a distinct character – powerful, direct, and with proven finishing skills in tight places.

The Black Cats have already spent heavily this summer, signing high-profile players such as Simon Adingra, Chemsdine Talbi, Granit Xhaka, and Robin Roefs, among others. However, the signing of Guiu underlines the club’s continuous commitment to developing a strong and competitive Premier League side. The agreement is anticipated to be completed in the next days, barring any unexpected developments.
