Sunderland player wanted by two MLS clubs

Sunderland’s Nectar Triantis is wanted by two MLS clubs amid interest from Hibernian, according to the Edinburgh Evening News.

Sunderland must make a choice on the future of the dynamic midfielder. SAFC are prepared for life in the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship.
Triantis, 21, spent last season on loan at Hibernian and was an important player for the Edinburgh club. He appeared in 50 games across all competitions for the Scottish Premiership club, scoring three goals and assisting six.

In the most recent update on his condition, the Edinburgh Evening News says that two unnamed American teams want him this summer. He wants to return to Easter Road, but David Gray’s team will have to compete for his services.

Triantis revealed which Australian players he looks up to earlier this year, as per an interview with the Socceroos’ website: “As a young player myself, you tend to look up to the older boys. Jackson Irvine is in my position, but also Maty Ryan, the experience and the leadership qualities that he has. I think for me, they’re the big two that I’ve really tried to learn from. [Tony Popovic] just said to continue believing in myself. I’m a young player.”

Sunderland’s Nectar Triantis wanted in MLS

Sunderland signed Triantis in 2023, and he has since played five games for the North East club. His contract with the Black Cats expires in June 2027, therefore he still has two years remaining.
He began his career in Australia with Sydney FC, but did not appear in a single A-League game. Instead, he moved to rivals Western Sydney Wanderers, where he played once for their senior team before joining the Central Coast Mariners.

The Sydney native was a fan favorite on the Central Coast, appearing 26 times before migrating to England. He was given the green light to spend the final campaign with Hibernian and performed admirably.

What now for Nectar Triantis at Sunderland?

Triantis’ chances of receiving regular game time at Sunderland next season are minimal in the top division due to player competition. It wouldn’t be surprising if he left SAFC again in some way.

A return to Hibernian would be thrilling for him because the club will be in the Europa League. They finished third in the table, trailing Celtic and Rangers.

However, the prospect of playing in the MLS may pique his interest. That would be an opportunity for him to step outside of his comfort zone and try something new in a different culture.
