After winning promotion back to the Premier League, Sunderland are being linked with a whole host of names ahead of the summer transfer window opening.
Now that the promotion celebrations have died down, Regis Le Bris can begin to plan for Sunderland’s return to the Premier League.
Sunderland have been connected with Jordan Henderson, who may make a surprise comeback to the Stadium of Light 15 years after leaving.
The Black Cats are also keeping an eye on winger Kwame Poku, who had a standout season in League One for Peterborough United.
It’s become evident that Le Bris will need to add firepower to his forward line if his team is to stay up, and one player should be on their radar.

In January 2015, Sunderland signed Premier League legend Jermain Defoe, who quickly became a cult hero at the Stadium of Light. After a slow start in front of goal under Dick Advocaat, the North East giants witnessed his incredible scoring powers under Sam Allardyce in 2015/16. Defoe plundered 15 Premier League goals during that campaign, helping Sunderland pull off an incredible escape.
In the next season, he even matched that total, but it wasn’t enough to keep them up; they were relegated in 2016-17.
When Defoe signed for Sunderland and returned temporarily for the 2021/22 season, he was nearing the end of his career, but his top-level expertise proved invaluable.
Now that Jamie Vardy is poised to become a free agent, the newly promoted side should emulate their feat and sign the Englishman.
Although he is 38 years old and would command a premium salary, he is still capable of scoring goals at the greatest level, which is precisely what Sunderland requires.
Vardy would add vital experience and goals to Sunderland
Vardy is one of the most prolific English goal scorers of all time. With 145 Premier League goals to his name, he understands where the goal is.
Last season, the guy with a Premier League title and an FA Cup in his trophy cabinet scored nine goals for a struggling Leicester City team.
So, with Sunderland’s strikers Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda having no top-flight experience between them, Vardy might be an excellent coach for a young club.
On a one-year contract, it makes perfect sense for Le Bris to sign the lethal finisher, who still has plenty to offer at the highest level.
