Sunderland target breaks silence on £34m transfer links amid Manchester United interest

Comuzzo, Fiorentina’s £34 million-rated defender, has addressed recent transfer interest, including links to Sunderland.

Pietro Comuzzo, a Fiorentina centre-back who was recently linked with a move to Sunderland, has spoken out about his future after receiving interest from Napoli and reputed Premier League suitors.

The 20-year-old, who signed a contract extension with La Viola earlier this year, was previously identified as a target for the Black Cats as they evaluate defensive alternatives ahead of the new top-flight season. According to Italian sources, Sunderland are considering numerous profiles for a potential centre-back recruitment, with Comuzzo among those being scouted.

In an interview with Radio FirenzeViola, which was transmitted by Quotidiano Sportivo, Comuzzo hinted at a strong emotional connection to Fiorentina, citing the club’s support throughout a personal tragedy and underlining his current pleasure in Florence.

“The contract renewal was a strong signal from the club, a demonstration of respect,” Comuzzo told the newspaper.

“President [Rocco] Commisso is a lovely person, and I share a unique affinity with him. When my mother died, he was one of the first to come and comfort me. This is also why I’m glad I stayed in this city, which feels like a second home to me.”

The Italian youth international also revealed that Napoli’s interest in January had briefly concerned him, but he was eventually pleased to stay with Fiorentina. The player has also recently been linked to Manchester United. “Napoli’s offer in January honestly caught me a bit off guard,” he told me. “It all happened so quickly, but apart from the two or three days, the most intense ones, when I thought about it more, once the negotiations were over, I calmly set off on my way, convinced I had made the right choice, and I continued to give my all for this team.”

Comuzzo, who made his senior debut two seasons ago, has received high accolades in Italy for his tactical understanding and poise in possession. Though Fiorentina apparently sees him as a future star, his rise has sparked interest from clubs in both Serie A and the Premier League.

Sunderland’s recruitment under Régis Le Bris has already seen the signings of Robin Roefs, Granit Xhaka, Marc Guiu, and Reinildo, among others, but the club is still looking for at least one more central defender. While a move for Comuzzo is improbable at the moment, given his recent statements, the scenario might yet change based on Fiorentina’s objectives and any late-window options. Fiorentina, on the other hand, is hesitant to part ways with the player unless they receive a price of €40 million (about £34 million).

What more Sunderland contract and transfer news is available?

Sunderland confirmed on Wednesday that they have completed the loan signing of Chelsea forward Marc Guiu. The 19-year-old, who was anticipated in Wearside last weekend, had his physical on Wednesday and signed a straight season-long loan.

Guiu joins Sunderland as their ninth summer signing, competing for minutes with Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman stated, “In a loan acquisition, we have to convince both the player and the parent club, and we thank Chelsea for putting their trust in us.” According to The Athletic, Sunderland will pay Chelsea a financial penalty if Guiu does not play a set amount of games.

Finally, Fabrizio Romano has stated that Sunderland has agreed to a new long-term contract with Eliezer Mayenda. Last season, the Spanish attacker scored ten goals and assisted five times, including a key strike in the play-off final. With Premier League football on the horizon, Sunderland have acted quickly to ensure his future, despite mounting outside interest. Sunderland’s summer business is far from over, with further signings likely – but significant contract renewals, loan additions, and probable exits continue to shape what is becoming a defining period for the club.
