Sunderland transfer news: Interesting Nectar Triantis update as...

Given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his short-term future at Sunderland, Nectar Triantis is expected to

resume for preseason training on Friday.

After a season in which he performed admirably as the team’s holding midfielder, Hibernian is eager to get the 22-

year-old back, and they have discussed a deal with the Black Cats. However, according to The Daily Record, Triantis

is still unsure and wants to see if he has a chance to impose himself on Régis Le Bris’s plans for the next campaign.

Triantis has two years left on his Sunderland deal, and Hibernian is amenable to another loan. With Sunderland

likely to want a seven-figure fee and possible future incentives based on performance, they are also eager to see if

they can reach a permanent contract and think they have the financial wherewithal to do so.

Triantis, though, is a man in demand. Bundesliga side St Pauli have been monitoring his availability while according

to The Daily Record, Championship side Blackburn Rovers have also emerged as a suitor. There is also said to have

been interest from the MLS this summer.

There will be fierce competition for midfield spots at Sunderland next season, as Habib Diarra is close to signing a

club-record contract to come from Ligue 1 team RC Strasbourg. However, there might be space for a more

specialised holding midfielder, as the team currently lacks the central defenders Triantis played when he initially

joined.

This week, Hibs kicks off their preseason campaign with games against Ajax and Duisburg behind closed doors. On

Friday, Sunderland’s team will resume preseason drills before starting official training on Monday.

Malky Mackay, Hibernian’s sporting director, stated to The Scottish Football Social Club earlier this summer that the

team was negotiating a new contract with Sunderland.

“I think he’s been called up for two countries now, and he’s had a great season,” Mackay stated.

“He has received calls for Australia and Greece. He is ultimately a Sunderland player, and that is who he is. He is a

candidate for Player of the Year and has garnered a lot of attention. Although we adore him, he is regrettably not one

of our players. Therefore, we will undoubtedly speak with Sunderland throughout the upcoming time frame.

“We’ve talked to them, we’ve been talking to them, but ultimately that’s not one that’s within our control. He’s one of

a group of people that we want to try and co-ordinate, we want to try and extend; to keep at the club and there’s

reasons why.

We would do both [loan or permanent transfer],” he added.

“At the present, our owners and minority owners are one. We had a great three or four hours with Bill Foley and the

Black Knights group last week when Ian Gordon and I went out to see them. Just in terms of what transpired during

the season, including the positive, negative, and ugly aspects. However, they are highly in agreement with what the

future was going to look like.
