Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson wanted by Southampton

According to their former senior scout, Southampton is planning a summer bid to capture Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

The 25-year-old is seen as a possible Aaron Ramsdale replacement, according to an exclusive interview with Football Insider from Mick Brown, who was once the chief scout at Man United and Blackburn and is still very well-connected at his former teams.

Patterson might be let to depart after a successful Championship season in which he was instrumental in the Black Cats’ promotion.

This follows Brown’s March statement to Football Insider that Southampton is getting ready for Ramsdale to depart before a “huge” summer at St Mary’s.

On July 1, Football Insider reported that Sunderland was looking to add a new goalkeeper, citing connections to players like Marcin Bulka and Djordje Petrovic.

In the midst of continuous rumors, Patterson will therefore have to decide whether to stay and battle for his spot at the Stadium of Light or to depart.

Sunderland will decide on Anthony Patterson.

Despite interest from teams like Manchester United and Tottenham, Brown told Football Insider in January that Sunderland intended to retain Patterson for the long run.

But after more than ten years with Manchester United at their most successful time, the former scout, who has a lot of knowledge in top-level player recruitment, has insisted that their plans to purchase a new goalkeeper have left his future uncertain.

He told Football Insider, “Patterson is a great young goalie with a solid reputation.”

“I still have some reservations about him, and it appears that Sunderland may be no different.

They have been searching for a new goalie for the Premier League, most likely due to their need for consistency and a little more experience.

Patterson’s future is therefore uncertain because they are discussing his status.

According to what I’ve been informed, Southampton is among the teams considering him since they anticipate Ramsdale leaving.

“Clubs have been considering him, and his contract contains a release clause.

Southampton’s goal this season is to get promoted, and Patterson clearly has that experience in the Championship.

Therefore, it is very logical for both clubs.

It will ultimately depend on Patterson’s desire to remain and battle for his spot at Sunderland or to return to the Championship.

“I know he would really like to stay at Sunderland, but he will get a sense of what the club is planning, so it’s a tough decision.”

Matteo Guendouzi’s  update the Stadium of Light.

In addition to a goalkeeper, Sunderland is aiming to fill a number of important positions as part of its ambitious recruitment plans before returning to the top flight.

On July 1, Brown told Football Insider that Regis Le Bris is lobbying for Sunderland to sign Matteo Guendouzi from Lazio.

To strengthen their midfield and add Premier League experience, Guendouzi, who played for Lorient as a young player and Le Bris managed their B club, is being examined.

After Abdoulaye Doucoure departed Everton, Football Insider exclusively disclosed that Sunderland is interested in signing him on a free transfer.
